Peter Saunders

Peter Saunders is a born Londoner. The fact that he loves and is fascinated by the city is evident from his paintings, and it seems eminently suitable that his work appears in some of the city’s most important collections - such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Museum of London and the London Transport Museum, as well as the collection of the Arts Council of England and The National Trust.

He attended Camberwell School of Art from the age of 16. In 1961 he went on to study painting at the Slade School of Art and continued to gain a post graduate qualification, also receiving the school’s Painting prize. After his studies, he embarked on a private scholarship to Greece, and on returning to England started teaching at the Norwich Art School and Oxford Polytechnic until 1982, where he commenced a teaching post at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Arts at the London Guildhall University. He also taught at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, eventually retiring from teaching in 1996.

Peter’s work has won many awards including the Spirit of London 1st and runner up prices, several times. He was been commissioned to create a mural for the National Trust, and a poster for London Underground’s classic ‘Art on the Underground’ series.
