Peter Musson

Peter works primarily in silver, a versatile material which can take on many appearances depending on the techniques applied. His work is designed to be controversial with strong functionality and incorporates mass production with innovative techniques to create highly individual pieces.

He states that the user should never have to question what the function of a piece is, it should be utterly apparent and totally integrated. He challenges the material and pushes at the boundaries of craft ideals, and of computer design potential, while retaining a focus on the hands-on bench techniques of his craft. He likens the computer to a hammer, as a tool with which to visualize and develop three dimensional forms in virtual space – such state of the art techniques, combined with the language of traditional metalwork, drive him towards new forms of making.

Born in 1977, Peter gained his BA in Manchester and MA at the Royal College of Art before taking up residency at Bishopsland, Oxfordshire. In addition to his design work he is a regular visiting lecturer to various university courses. He has won four awards from Thames Valley Economic Partnership 2000 – 2001 as well as managing production for Stella McCartney’s jewellery collection, autumn 2004.

His commissions have included pieces for The Keatley Trust, Water Pitcher for ‘Head of the River’ at Pembroke College, Oxford, Finger Bowl for New College, Oxford, two pieces in the Victoria and Albert Museum, two pieces in the Royal College of Art, pieces in the New College Oxford Fellow’s Collection, as well as The Royal Mint Medal Collection. In 2004, he was shortlisted for the Leonardo award for Silversmiths, he won the 2003 Armourers and Brasiers Company prize for Design and Innovation, was commended at the Goldsmiths’ Company Craftsmanship and Design Awards in 2003, won 1st prize in the Royal Mint Medal competition in 2002, and the Goldsmiths’ and Manchester Metropolitan University Silver Grant Award in 1999. His work has featured in many high profile publications including Elle Decoration, The Times and Burlington Magazine.
