Andrew was born in London in 1941. He studied art throughout his secondary schooling at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, under the tutelage of Eyton and Uglow amongst others. In 1961 he attained a National Diploma in Design, specialising in painting, and in 1964 graduated from the Royal College of Art with a 1st class degree, as well as the RCA Silver Medal for work of special distinction. He was also awarded a major travelling scholarship to study at the British School at Rome.
A year later, he was appointed lecturer at the Fine Art Department of Newcastle University, a position which led him to become head of Painting, a position he retained until retiring in 1993.
After retirement, Andrew lived for some years in France, before returning to the UK in 2001. Throughout and since his teaching years he remained a prolific painter, and his work has been exhibited in various galleries throughout England and Scotland.
