Jonathan Hateley is a trained graphic designer and illustrator who has been sculpting since his teens. Although he has exhibited his work and sculpted on commission since 2003, he has only recently turned to professional sculpture on a full time basis.
He honed his sculptural skills early on at architectural model makers, Thorpes, and later moved into special effects modelmaking. In 1988 he joined the English National Opera Company where he created sculpture for performances of shows including La Traviata, The Magic Flute and Madam Butterfly. He has worked on a freelance basis for the BBC, Dorling Kindersley, Hensons and Asylum Models and Effects for many years.
Jonathan uses the skills and experience he gained in creating work for stage and screen to create extremely detailed figurative sculpture that captures feeling and emotion, often combined with subtle humour. Animals are a particular favourite.
