Grant is a British silversmith whose formal qualification lies in jewellery. In 1998, he found himself at a crossroads, finding that teaching simply lacked the hands on approach he most enjoyed. Grant changed direction in order to reappraise his skills, and saw silversmithing as a rich and interesting direction.
Silversmithing gave Grant the opportunity to build on his extensive jewellers techniques. He has since developed an array of specialist techniques which bring the finesse of the two allied fields together to great effect. They range from metal and wood-turning to press forming and sinking. He uses a variety of materials, varying in texture and colour, to complement the innate qualities of the silver, which is always the predominant focus, thus generating a harmony between contrasting objects. Grant's aim is to always stay true to the materials he uses so as to highlight their intrinsic beauty, at the same time as demonstrating a need for function. Simple everyday objects, buildings and nature influence and inspire Grant, as well as the work of other artists and sculptors.
In February 2005, he won the Craftsmanship and Design Award from Goldsmiths' Hall and he was short-listed for the Silver Award at the 25th Chelsea Craft Show in 2004. Grant is also a full member of the Association of British Designer Silversmiths. His work has been internationally exhibited, with shows throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.
