Ndidi is rapidly building a reputation as one of today's most creative metal designers.
Ndidi often works by raising forms from flat sheet silver, to create highly tactile and rounded yet fluid forms which are often inspired by nature and her wonders. She is extremely skilled in traditional hand techniques of gilding and finishing, but applies these in fresh ways to create surprising effects.
Refusing to be restricted is one of her trademarks, and she will occasionally surprise by diverging from her silver standard to create larger scale metal works in materials such as copper, which are firmly sculptural in nature.
While silver and goldsmiths have often played with the effects of light, Ndidi is beginning to play with the effect of metal on light, promising some interesting developments. Her first light feature was recently displayed at the Crafts Council exhibition ‘Mixed Belongings – Eight Contemporary African Makers'. Ndidi has a long association with the Crafts Council having served as artist in residence during 2004; she also featured in its ‘Making it Yours – Metal' exhibition earlier this year.
Born in 1973, Ndidi originally studied three-dimensional design and continued her education at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1998. She was awarded a bursary by Aspreys that year, building on several other existing awards.
Her work has been widely exhibited since 1997 when Aspreys displayed her work as part of ‘Living with Silver'. She has exhibited in New York, Germany and Belgium as well as the UK where she has shown at 'Collect' at the V&A and Goldsmiths Fair, and she has featured at most of the UK's most prestigious art fairs.
Ndidi's work has gone into some of the country's most exclusive collections. She is sought after for commissions, which include a bowl and jug for Winchester Cathedral, a silver bowl and spoon for the Crafts Council Collection, a Rosewater dish for The Worshipful Company of Weavers, a silver Butterfly Vase for the 25 th anniversary of the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead, and most recently, a black truffle bowl for Truffle Ltd which was shown at the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show. Her Flamingo Vase was included in the Rothschild Collection.
